Bishop Spencer Place is a faith-based organization, and we enjoy a close association with Saint Luke’s Hospital and the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri. There’s security in knowing that our Medical Director is a board-certified geriatrician and a member of the Saint Luke’s medical staff. He is able to offer on-site physician services to residents as needed.

What is skilled care at Bishop Spencer Place?
Skilled care includes senior health services provided by licensed nurses or rehabilitation therapists specifically trained to treat, manage, observe and evaluate your care. Examples of skilled nursing care services include intravenous injections, wound care and physical therapy. Skilled care is provided in our York Place skilled nursing community. Care that can be given by non-professional staff is not considered skilled care.
Skilled care requires the involvement of skilled nursing or rehabilitative staff in order to be given safely and effectively. Skilled nursing and rehabilitative staff include:
- Registered nurses
- Licensed practical and voctional nurses
- Physical and occupational therapists
- Speech language pathologists
- Audiologists
How is skilled nursing care different from a nursing home?
A nursing home is for people who require assistance with activities of daily living and can no longer be cared for at home. While receiving skilled nursing care at Bishop Spencer Place from dedicated and caring professionals, residents have access to many of same lifestyle services and amenities offered to independent living residents. Independent living residents of Bishop Spencer Place have access to on-site nursing care, if ever needed, and the focus on lifestyle is a key difference between skilled nursing at Bishop Spencer Place and a nursing home.
Why would I need skilled nursing or rehabilitation care?
You receive skilled nursing care to:
- Help improve your condition, or to
- Maintain your current condition and prevent it from getting worse.
You receive skilled rehabilitation care to:
- Help improve your condition, within a predetermined time period, or to
- Establish a maintenance program designed to maintain your current condition and prevent it from getting worse.
Skilled nursing care helps you to get better, function more independently, and/or learn to take care of your health needs. You and your family can take part in setting your health goals.
When and how long does Medicare cover care in a skilled nursing center?
Medicare covers certain skilled nursing care services that are needed daily on a short-term basis (up to 100 days) after a 3-day qualifying hospital stay and if you continue to meet Medicare’s benefit requirements.
