Kansas City's Women's Lifestyle Expo

Mendi Hanna and Patty Voyles crossed the line – the State Line that is – to exhibit at Kansas City Women’s Living Expo on Saturday and Sunday, January 20-21 at the Overland Park Convention Center. This two day event offered women from all over the metro area a chance to shop, get pampered, learn new cooking and gardening techniques and visit with physicians and other healthcare professionals to discuss issues related to women’s health and lifestyle choices. Mendi and Patty visited with many guests and vendors throughout the event to educate them on the benefits of living in a senior community and offered specific information on why Bishop Spencer Place is the Place to Be!

Ruben Pascottini Piano Recital

Pianist Ruben Pascottini had his Bishop Spencer Place debut concert on January 30th in the Madison Living Room. Ruben was born in the capital of Paraguay, Asuncion, which is located in the middle of South America. He played his first piano recital at the young age of 6. In 1989 he came ot the USA to study English and while here was awarded a scholarship in piano performace from the University of Kansas. Over the years, he has been fortunate to be able to perform for groups from 10 to 500; for government officials, dignitaries, upscale hotels, fine restaurants, country clubs, private parties, and his special favoriate - retirement communities! His repetoire includes nostalgic and contemporary tunes from mostly American and Latin American composers.

Resident Celebrates 90th Birthday!

Resident, Betty Cullen celebrates her 90th birthday with friends and family in our Madison Living Room on December 28, 2011.

Coventry Court & York Place Holiday Party

Coventry Court Assisted Living and York Place Skilled Nursing & Rehab Holiday Party was held in our Canterbury dining room on December 22, 2011. Residents and their families joined staff and special guest, Santa Claus to celebrate Christmas. Santa passed out gifts to all our Residents.

Resident Bill Buckner's Pheasant Dinner

Resident Bill Buckner loves to go pheasant hunting. He brings back what he catches and Chef Earl, with PB&J Restaurants, prepares the pheasants for Mr. Buckner's dinner party. He hosted this event on December 17, 2011 in our Abbey.

Employee Holiday Luncheon

We held our Annual Employee Holiday Luncheon in our Canterbury Dining Room on December 16, 2011. PB&J Restaurants, our dining service provider, prepared a wonderful Italian meal and some of our Board Members attended as well.

All Hands Meeting

Once a quarter all Bishop Spencer Place Employees attend an All Hands Meeting to get an update on how our community is doing, learn about upcoming employee related events and to honor our Employees with 5+ years of service. This meeting took place on December 9, 2011.

Army vs. Navy Football Game

West Point Society of Greater Kansas City gathered in our Westport Room on December 11, 2011. With the drop down screen and TV hook up, plus service with beer and fajitas, made this the perfect place for 50 to 60 West Pointers and their families to watch the Army-Navy football game in Kansas City this year.

KCPC Holiday Mixer

Kansas City Partnership for Caregivers (KCPC) hosted a Holiday Mixer in our Westport Room on December 8, 2011 to attract new members.

Annual Meeting

On December 1, 2011, Residents, Board Members and Management gathered in our Canterbury Dining Room for our Annual Meeting to honor our out going Board Members, welcome in new Board Members and review the year's budget and achievements.

Saint Luke's Holiday CEU Luncheon

We sent our transportation over to pick up Saint Luke's Social Workers & Case Managers for our 3rd Annual Holiday CEU Luncheon in our Canterbury Dining Room on December 1, 2011.

Resident Celebrates 100th Birthday!

Resident, Betty Lee, celebrates her 100th Birthday with friends and family in our Madison Living Room on November 29, 2011.

Resident Presents: Fly Fishing in the Alaskan Wilderness

Resident, Bill Buckner, shared his fly fishing adventure in the Alaskan Wilderness with his friends and neighbors on November 28, 2011 in our Westport Room. Those in attendance had the pleasure of viewing 80 of Mr. Buckner's best pictures showing his bush pilot experience flying to seven different rivers in the Bristol Bay, Alaska drainage area during his seven day trip last August where he saw lots of bears, some wolves, sea otters and white beluga whales.

Annual Thanksgiving Tea

The Annual Thanksgiving Tea took place on November 20, 2011 in our Madison Living Room. The Bow Wind Duo entertained our residents and their friends and family. A locally owned business, The Teahouse and Coffeepot, provided their specialized loose leaf teas for the event.

Veteran's Day 2011

On Friday, November 11, 2011 we hosted a Tribute to our Veterans here at Bishop Spencer Place in our Madison Living Room.

Annual Resident & Staff Chili Cook Off

On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 we held our Annual Resident & Staff Chili Cook Off in our Pub. This year we added a soup category and encouraged donations for our Employee Caring Fund. We had great participation and wonderful chili & soup. Our dining service provider, PB&J Restaurants provided baked potatoes and toppings. We raised a total of $400!

Don Accurso Orchestra: Music of the 1940's.

Don Accurso has been leading a band for 65 years, since he came home from the United States Military Service. There are six current members in his band, one of them has been with him for 40 years. Bishop Spencer Place Resident, Ann Atkin has been singing with the band for over 20 years.

Annual All Saints Memorial Service

On November 1, 2011 we held our Annual All Saints Memorial Service in our Chapel of the Epiphany. It is a celebration and service of thanksgiving for the lives of Residents departed this life during the past year.

Staff Costume & Pumpkin Contest

Residents & Staff came out to enjoy the annual Staff Halloween Costume & Pumpkin Contest on October 31, 2011.

St. Paul's Children Trick or Treat

St. Paul's Children came down to sing Halloween songs and Trick or Treat with our Residents on October 31, 2011.

Bishop's Benefit 2011

On Wednesday, October 19, 2011 we hosted our Bishop's Benefit at the InterContinental Hotel on The Plaza to raise funds for our Benevolent Care. Since opening December 6, 1995, Bishop Spencer Place has provided more than $10,000,000 for benevolent care to residents who have exhausted their resources.

Ingram's 2011 Best of Business Event

Jamie Cornell, Marketing Representative and Patty Voyles, Outreach Representative attended Ingram's 2011 Best of Business Event on Friday, October 21, 2011 to pick up our Gold Award for Best Retirement Community! It is Bishop Spencer Place's 2nd year in a row to receive this award!

President Truman & First Lady Bess Event

On October 12, 2011 the Marketing Team hosted a Characterization Event of President Harry S Truman and First Lady Bess in our Westport Room. Afterwards, our guests enjoyed fall drinks and hors d'oeuvres in our Jefferon Lobby prepared by our dining service provider, PB&J Restaurants.

Blessing of the Hands Service

Once a year our Chaplains host a Blessing of the Hands Service in our Chapel for all Residents and Employees to attend. The Chaplains give an encouraging message about service, we worship God together and the Chaplains pray individually with each in attendance a special blessing over their service here at Bishop Spencer Place. This service was held on October 12, 2011.

Dance & Social

On October 14, 2011 we held another Dance & Social for our Residents in our Madison Living Room. One Man Band Ed Smith performed.

Bishop Spencer Place's Men's Club

Once a month our Resident Men get together in our Abbey to socialize with each other and enjoy cocktails. This Men's Club met on October 10, 2011.

Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute Grand Opening

Mendi Hanna, Director of Marketing, Jamie Cornell, Marketing Representative & Patty Voyles, Outreach Representative, represented Bishop Spencer Place at our affiliate, Saint Luke's Hospital's Grand Opening of their Mid America Heart Institute on Sunday, October 9, 2011.

Stroke Walk

Patty Voyles, Outreach Representative, represented Bishop Spencer Place at The American Stroke Foundation's annual Stroke Walk on Saturday, October 1, 2011.

Retired Clergy Luncheon

Bishop Spencer Place hosted the Retired Clergy of the Diocese of West Missouri Luncheon in our Canterbury Dining Room on September 30, 2011.

Bake Sale & Raffle

On September 23, 2011 our Passion Team held a bake sale & raffle to raise money for our Employee Caring Fund, created to help our employees who need money when an unexpected emergengy comes up. We raised $470!

Metro Senior Resources

Bishop Spencer Place hosted Metro Senior Resources, a networking group for professionals in the health care field, on September 21, 2011 in our Westport Room. Dr. Price spoke to the group about Sleeping Disorders for Seniors.

The Art of Travel Event

On September 15, 2011 photographer Lynette Ubel was our special guest show casing some pieces from her Mirrors of Latitude Collection. Our dining service provider PB&J Restaurants created a beautiful display of hors d'oeuvres and cocktails for our guests. We all mingled in our Art Gallery and Bistro.

Coventry Court's Funny Fashion Show

On September 16, 2011 employees put on a Funny Fashion Show for our Assisted Living Residents. This was just one of a variety of activities planned in honor of Assisted Living Week.

Safety Fair 2011

We held our annual Safety Fair for all employees on September 14th-17th in our Westport Room.

Holy Open

Patty Voyles, Outreach Representative, represented Bishop Spencer Place at the Saint Andrew's Holy Open Golf Tournament on September 8, 2011.

Families Facing the Realities of Aging Event

We hosted Rebecca MacKinnon, co-author of If I Were An Only Child. She shared her personal knowledge about the emerging relationships between the individual baby boomer, their siblings and their aging parents in our Westport Room on Wednesday, September 7, 2011.

Marketing Office Move

We are running out of apartments to sell so it was time to move Jamie Cornell, Marketing Representative, out of her model apartment office into a more permanent office space with a new office buddy, Patty Voyles, Outreach Representative. Now the Marketing Team is all close together with the new office space next door to Mendi Hanna, Director of Marketing. Marketing hosted a Thank You Pizza Lunch for our wonderful maintenance and housekeeping team who made the move so smooth!

Summer Employee BBQ

Our Passion Team concluded the Endless Summer series by bringing in Oklahoma Joe's BBQ for all the employees on September 1, 2011.

Coventry Court & York Place Petting Zoo

Stable T Farm brought in a variety of animals for our Coventry Court Assisted Living and York Place Skilled Nursing Residents to enjoy on August 24, 2011 for their State Fair Week.

Dr. Metz Art Donation Reception

Dr. Florence Metz, a fine art collector for many years as well as a Bishop Spencer Place Resident, has generously chosen to share many pieces of her collection with our community. Artists in the collection include world famous names such as Jorge Dumas, Lebadang, Linda LeKinf, Igor Medvedev, Barbara Woods, Sam Scott and Itzchak Tarkay. We honored Dr. Metz for her art donation with a reception in our Madison Living Room on Wednesday, August 17, 2011.

Employee Treats

This Summer our Passion Team, made up of employees from different departments in our community, decided to bring Summer Vacation to work. This event was held on Friday, August 19, 2011. They provided Apple and Cherry Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream!

KC Royals Night Out

BSP Emoplyees enjoyed a summer night out to watch a KC Royals Game, eat $1 hot dogs and watch fireworks on Friday, July 22, 2011!

Mai Tais & Me Time Spa Event for Networking Professionals.

On July 21,2011 the marketing department transformed the Jefferson Lobby, living room and rotunda into a Day Spa thanks in part to our partners/friends at Saint Luke’s Center for Health Enhancement and West Plaza Nails. Guests (professional referral sources) could choose from three different stations -including manicures, chair massages, and reflexology. While they waited they were treated to fabulous food and drinks prepared by our own dining service provider, PB&J Restaurants. We hosted this event to say thank you to all of the professionals who refer their clients to our community, and for those professionals who have expressed an interest in learning more about the many services we have to offer their clients.

Kansas City Partnership for Caregivers (KCPC) “Margaritas and Munchies” Membership Mixer

KCPC is a coalition of organizations and individuals working to educate and support caregivers of older adults. They meet the 2nd Thursday of every month right here at Bishop Spencer Place in our Westport room from 3:00-4:30pm. This event hosted on July 14, 2011 helped to increase awareness and membership of this resourceful group.

Coventry Court & York Place Pool Party

Coventry Court Assisted Living and York Place Skilled Nursing & Rehab Residents enjoyed the first full day of summer on June 22, 2011 with a pool party.

BSP Hosts First Dance & Social

On June 17, 2011, Bishop Spencer Place hosted our first Senior Dance and Social. There are several senior venues in the general area that host similar dances, but none in the Plaza/ Westport area. Clark and Ruth Achelpohl, new residents at Bishop Spencer Place, suggested we host our own to remedy that problem. The Kansas City Swing Band performed the classics from their generation while residents and community members danced all afternoon.

Volunteer Reception 2011

On Thursday, May 26th we held our annual Volunteer Reception to recognize and honor all of our volunteers which include our residents who volunteer on the variety of Resident Commitees such as: Garden Commitee, Food Service Commitee and Alter Guild just to name a few here at Bishop Spencer Place.

Garden Arrangements Party May 25, 2011

Guests enjoyed a beautiful presentation by Becky Miller, a florist from the Fiddly Fig. She offered tips on how to keep and arrange flowers from your own garden. Our guests also enjoyed delicious springtime refreshments prepared by PB&J Restaurants, our dining service provider.

Shawnee Mission East Lancer’s Literary

On May 16, 2011 our residents and students from the Shawnee Mission East Lancer's Literary came together to discuss the book they have been reading.

Mother's Day Tea 2011

We honored all our Mother's here at Bishop Spencer Place with our annual Mother's Day Tea held in our Madison Living Room. Steve Seggerman, our CEO, served our mother's hot tea, which they enjoyed with pastries and tea sandwiches along with the background music of a harp.

Derby Day 2011

At Bishop Spencer Place we celebrate Derby Day with frosted mint juleps prepared by that son of Old Kentucky, Resident Bill Buckner, and served by Resident Susie Harman who tore a mint leaf before she put the sprig of mint in each goblet as she handed it to a thirsty guest. Some ladies were momentarily disappointed that Pants on Fire ridden by Ms. Napravnik came in out of the money, but the pictures clearly show celebration with juleps.

Royal Wedding Happy Hour

Residents gathered in our Canterbury Dining Room and Pub to celebrate the Royal Wedding on Friday, April 29, 2011 for their monthly themed Happy Hour.

BSP Easter Community Outreach Project!

Bishop Spencer Place Residents created 60 Easter Baskets, to be delivered to Freedom Fire Ministries, which meets at the Hope Faith Homeless Shelter on Sundays. A special thank you to Edora Stell, Louise Nyberg, Joyce Byers and Dorothea Schloesser for their help and to Dr. Marjorie Sirridge, Jeanette Nichols, and Jean Blackman for their contributions!

The Upside of Downsizing Lunch & Learn on April 13, 2011

Guests gathered in our Canterbury Dining Room with Resident Ambassadors and Staff where they enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by PB&J Restaurants, our dining service provider, and learned how Bishop Spencer Place assists with the moving process. Special speakers included: Linda Scardino, owner of Gentle Changes, Claire McCurdy, realtor for Reece and Nichols and Country Club bank discussed swing loans.

Transportation Service

We provide complimentary transportation for Residents to all planned activities, over to Saint Luke's Hospital and over to The Center for Health Enhancement. All other transportation is only $1.25 per mile.

Sunday Brunch

Chef Earl updated our Sunday Brunch Menu the beginning of October 2011 after we removed our buffet, which was primarily used for Sunday Brunch. The Residents love having made to order Brunch selections versus buffet style.
